LANDSCAPES

Landscape photographs were also a way of surveying wealth and showing the distinctive aspects of the fauna, flora, hydrography and orography of the regions crossed. The photographs often recorded notable elements in the landscape, such as remarkable rocks, which served as landmarks or points of reference. Some of which have other meanings for the local people.

Frontier Stories:
"The negroes here said they wanted to be Portuguese, but upon our arrival, despite our sympathy, they rushed to take their gifts to the Boers, whom they knew well. Until then, they had not paid taxes because it was unknown whether they were Boers or Portuguese."

(Freire de Andrade's Report, p 19)
